Live the life of privilege today as Amanda Bretz talks about her new Totally Bound release #romance

Another Side to Celebrity in Life of Privilege

Hi Elodie, thanks for once again hosting me on your wonderful blog. I’m very pleased to be here today discussing my new release Life of Privilege, released by Totally Bound Publishing. The novel is the newest in their best-selling What’s Her Secret? imprint, which are books that focus on a woman with a secret.

The tagline for this novel is Living the life of a celebrity isn’t always as perfect as it seems. As that short sentence alludes to, this is a story that shows there’s another side to being a celebrity beyond what the public sees. I know nothing about being a celebrity. I’m happy just being regular ol’ me, but when I set out to create this story, I did what writers do best: I used my imagination.

I envision celebrity worlds being not as glittering and glamorous as they’re often made out to be in media. When celebrities and reality TV stars end up in the news because of ill-behavior or some sort of scandal, I often wonder if there’s not a deeper reason for their actions beyond what the media reports. That mode of thought was the real jumping off point for me in creating this story and the book opens with a rather scandalous situation: a woman leaving a man at the altar.

Of course, since my heroine is a celebrity, it’s not as easy as just slipping out the back door of the church and going on her merry little way. The wedding takes place at one of the most prominent cathedrals in New York City and it’s being televised. The paparazzi is camped out in front of the church and in order for her to escape the situation, Katherine has to go through what I very well believe hell may look like. The path from the cathedral doors to the limo waiting to take her away is lined with members of the media, armed with huge cameras and tons of spectators.

I’ve brought along an excerpt from the beginning of the book and I hope your readers enjoy the opening of my novel.

Blurb:
Living the life of a celebrity isn’t always as perfect as it seems.
Katherine Dawson was born into a life of privilege as the heiress to an apparel dynasty. Between judging a reality TV competition for budding fashion designers and having been the face of her family’s clothing line for most of her life, she’s one of the biggest celebrities in her field.
When she becomes engaged to up-and-coming television producer Nathan Taylor, she appears to have it all. To any outsider, she has a picture-perfect life, so when Katherine leaves her groom-to-be at the altar and disappears, the tabloids are full of speculation over her sudden departure.
Fleeing New York to hide out in Seattle, she quickly finds that living the life of an heiress in hiding isn’t as easy as she thought, especially after she meets a magnetic writer named Royce Reynolds. In her new life on the West Coast, she struggles to keep her anonymity, and experiences a relationship with a man who wants her for the person she is, not the celebrity she used to be.

Excerpt:

“Daddy?”
Katherine Dawson’s voice echoed off the stone walls of St. Patrick’s cathedral. As one of New York City’s oldest churches, the structure had enough prestige and beauty to hold Sunday service, memorials, and it provided the perfect setting for storybook weddings.
When her father didn’t answer right away, Katherine gathered the heavy material of her wedding gown in her hand and walked the few steps to reach her dad. She looked down at the enormous bouquet of flowers in her hand and almost lost her nerve. Yet the longer she stared at the arrangement of white roses, calla lilies and orchids, the more it reinforced her gut reaction to this day. Like the stunning flowers arranged so perfectly in the bundle, she was also trussed up and made to look pristine. She too was arranged at her peak, the moment in her life when she was likely most attractive. She knew if she went through with this decision that just like the flowers, soon she would wither and lose her beautiful essence. Through the heavy wooden doors, she heard the faint strains coming from the fifteen-piece orchestra. They were preparing to play the wedding march. It was now or never. If she had any chance at escaping the glamorous affair, it was in this moment.
“Daddy.” She stood in front of her father and knew she must look as panicked and frightened as a wounded animal. “I have to get out of here. I can’t go through with this.”
Tears welled in her eyes, but she blinked fast to push them away. Once the waterworks started, she didn’t know when they might stop. She dropped her hold on the dress and reached for her father’s hand.
“I’m leaving. If you want to stay and deal with mother’s temper tantrums when she finds out I left Nathan at the altar, so be it. Daddy, I just can’t do this. Well, won’t you say something?”
Her father cleared his throat and it was then she noticed the tears that had formed in his eyes. She hated that she’d let him down, but she couldn’t go through life with such a momentous lie hanging over her head. She stood on tiptoe, wrapping her arms around him for a quick hug. “I’m sorry I’ve hurt you. I don’t want to be a disappointment to you, but I have to stay true to myself. You won’t see me for a while. I’m going away, but I don’t know where yet. I’ve got to go find out who I really am without all the pressures of being Katherine Dawson hanging over my head.”
“Kitty Kat,” he whispered, using her childhood nickname, “I could never be disappointed in you. I’m crying because you’ve made me happy. Go find yourself. Follow your dreams. That’s what I’ve always wanted for you. I love you.”
“Daddy, I love you, too.”
She turned her head toward the heavy wooden doors again. The wedding march was playing. She had to go now. Preparing for the sprint she knew she’d have to do to make it to the limousine that waited outside, she kicked off her silver-sequined Louboutin heels. Dropping her bouquet on the ground and gathering her skirt in her hands, she hurried out of the front door and down the church steps.
In her haste to escape the wedding, she’d forgotten about the crowd of reporters and spectators gathered along the sidewalk and in the street. At least fifty black cameras took aim at her and several eager members of the paparazzi stood right in her path, their camera flashes going off. She refused to look into their lenses, even as they called out to her by name. Her gaze was locked in on the back door of the limousine. Once she got there, she’d be home free.
“Katherine! Katherine! Why are you running?”
“Have cold feet, Katherine?”
“Where’s the groom?”
Ignoring the inane questions from the media, she opened the door to the back seat of the car. Franklin, her family’s driver, jumped from the front seat, prepared to help her into the vehicle. Katherine met his gaze and she shook her head. He took her unspoken command and hopped back behind the wheel. She could handle the paparazzi. After all, she’d been dodging the vultures since she’d been a teen. Pulling the door closed behind her provided a moment of peace. However, her relief was cut short as half of the camera-wielding men formed a semi-circle around the limousine while the rest scattered to nearby cabs. The car had to move before they got trapped—or worse—were followed by the bloodthirsty press.
“Where to?”

Harlot at the Homestead Blurb:

Sometimes retribution finds its own way but sometimes it needs a helping hand.
When Catherine Montgomery shows up at Kenan Duggan’s homestead, she expects him to be surprised. She’s been gone two years and she’s devastated to hear that her former fiancé was forced to give her up for dead.
Catherine never stopped thinking about Kenan and hoped that they’d be reunited one day. She has suffered at the hands of another but nothing tortured her as much as being apart from the man she loves. She doubts, however, that Kenan will be able to forgive her when she reveals her secrets.
As Kenan battles his desire for revenge, their mutual desire reawakens like a creek bed in the rain, and soon they are swept up in rediscovering their all-consuming passion.
Retribution often finds its own way in the Wild West and the men to blame for Catherine’s disappearance may well find themselves paying for their crimes in unexpected ways.
That’s if Kenan doesn’t get to them first!

Read an Excerpt:
Kenan stopped at a point where the bank grew flatter and the grass gave way to silt and sand. The water was shallow and crystal clear over the stones and Catherine suddenly realised how hot and uncomfortable she felt. High summer in Montana was usually hot and uncomfortable but this year it seemed hotter than hell. Beads of perspiration trickled down between her bosoms and the backs of her knees were clammy beneath her stockings.
“Let’s go in. It looks wonderful!”
Kenan smiled at her. “You always loved to swim, Catherine.”
They removed their shoes and outer garments then stood awkwardly.
“What now?” he asked.
“Just like always!” She chuckled.
His fingers trembled as he unhooked the front of her corset. He let it drop to the ground on top of her dress, then moved closer to her and encircled her wrist with his hands.  Her stomach flipped at the passion she saw in his gaze. He wanted her and loved her still but she had not yet revealed all to him. When she did, she feared that he would cast her aside like a broken saddle or a worn out boot.
“Hey!” He tipped up her chin with a fingertip. “What is it?”
She shook her head. “Nothing, just memories.”
“Good ones I hope.” He sighed as he bent his head to kiss her.
At first the kiss was soft and she relaxed into the warmth of his mouth, the sweetness of his breath. But as he pushed his hot tongue between her lips, she moaned and slid her hands through his hair. She filled her palms and her fingers with it then pulled his head towards her.
As they kissed, he loosened the waistband of her bloomers and she felt them slide down to the floor. The warm afternoon air caressed the naked skin of her legs and fluttered the edge of her chemise. Kenan held her body against the length of his and she felt his erection rock hard against her belly.
She giggled.
“What is it?” he asked breathlessly.
“Perhaps we’d better cool off?”
He looked down at the large bulge at his groin. “Maybe.”
He shrugged out of his union suit sleeves then slid it down over his legs. Catherine swallowed hard as she stared at his body. The hard cock stood to attention, pointing outwards from the dark curls of his pubic hair and pulling her eyes towards the balls beneath. He was a perfect male and she yearned to become one with him, to take him deep inside her and ride him until they both reached the point of no return.
“Now you!” His voice was husky but his tone was firm.
She undid the button at the front of her chemise then lifted it over her head. It was sheer as gossamer and featherlight. When she met his eyes again, the intensity of his gaze startled her. He looked so fierce, like he was about to explode with need and desire. He took her hand and led her towards the water’s edge. The cool river lapped at her toes and her nipples hardened, making her full breasts tingle.
“It’s freezing!”
“You’ll get used to it!” He eyed her naked form. He waded into the water until it reached his thighs then turned to face her. Catherine watched as goosebumps rose on his arms and the neat sack of skin that held the essence of his masculinity pulled itself up towards his body.  But his erection still stood firm and ready, the tip shimmering with a diamond like bead of moisture.
In a flurry of excitement, she pulled the pins from her hair and let its vermillion waves cascade down her back. The breeze lifted it and swirled it around her face, teasing her by limiting her view of Kenan. She flicked her head to push it aside and fixed her eyes upon the man she loved. Unable to resist any longer, she ran to him, splashing the icy water over them both as she did so. The river’s chilly grip travelled quickly up her legs and the tiny hairs on her neck and her arms stood on end.
Kenan grabbed her and pulled her with him into the flow and Catherine gasped as the cold water enveloped her, touching her inside and out. The sensation of the chilly water delving between the hot sensitive folds of her most private place was delicious and it heightened her desire to feel her lover’s cock there too.
“It’s freezing, Kenan!” She giggled.
He laughed then flicked water into her face. She shook her head, her thick hair heavy with the river. He reached out and tenderly spread her hair out so that it floated around her like a gathering of eels come to inspect her nudity.
“Come here!” Kenan embraced her.
Their cold, wet skin and his solid length prodding into her stomach fired her yearning to have him. She wanted to possess this man once more, before he knew the full truth. The fear that he might abandon her when she confessed all darkened her mind for an instant, like a cloud passing over the sun. But she shrugged it away, refusing to allow it to spoil this precious moment. Kenan pushed her towards the bank where he laid her on her back in the shallows. He eyed every inch of her body. The stones and sand were hard and cold beneath her skin but the fire in his gaze warmed her like the hot summer sun.
He stroked his hands over her stomach, across the curves of her hips then back towards the apex of her thighs. She moaned as he parted her legs and ran the fingers of his right hand between her swollen lips then over her aching bud. He rubbed it between his thumb and forefinger with a touch so experienced and knowledgeable that Catherine felt all sense and reason slipping away. Lost in passion, she lifted her hips towards him, eager for him to fill her up as she knew only he could.
Whilst he massaged her, he used his free hand to drip chilly droplets of water over her burning cunny. She flung out her arms and grabbed his shoulders, digging her nails wantonly into his flesh and pulling him down onto her, unable to wait another second. His body moulded to hers as if it were the other half of her and she flung her head back as he drove his erection into her soft flesh.
As excitement consumed him, he rocked into her, harder and faster and she spread her legs farther to take him deeper. The water splashed around them as they moved in perfect union and the current flowed over them, caressing their skin and creeping into forbidden places as if to join in their lovemaking.  Catherine bit into Kenan’s shoulder when the tensing and twitching of her pussy signalled the onset of her climax and her sensitive bud throbbed then burst into countless little explosions like lightning bolts piercing the night sky.
The aftershocks flooded throughout her entire body and her hot juices flowed from her loins. Her excitement spurred Kenan on and he thrust harder and faster before freezing as he reached his own shuddering release.
He rested his weight on his elbows and looked into her eyes. “You are amazing,” he whispered as he gently pushed the wet hair from her forehead. “No one should ever hurt you. Ever.”

Welcome to guest author Morticia Knight with her new release, The Fall of the House of Usher – Clandestine Style

The Fall of the House of Usher – Clandestine Style
What made me think that Edgar Allen Poe was a romance writer? Well, nothing really. As a matter of fact, when I was searching for a classic horror story to pair with Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Published back in May) I had considered and discarded almost immediately the idea of using any of Poe’s stories. After searching around however, there wasn’t really anything that hadn’t already been done by other Totally Bound authors, or there was absolutely no way of making it into a romance.
What brought me back to Poe was The Fall of the House of Usher. It’s always been one of my favorites, but it seemed to be impossible to reconcile with Madeline and her brother dying horribly, as well as Madeline only being in the entire story at all for no more than a dozen or so sentences. But when I re-read it, my thoughts went to a couple of different ‘what-if’s’, and I came up with a story line that turned doom and gloom into a happily-ever-after.
To give you a little hint as to how I morphed the story without changing any of Poe’s original words (part of the Clandestine Classic rules), I’m including the following excerpt from when Edward – Roderick’s boyhood chum – is finally able to locate the mysterious Lady Madeline Usher and sneak into her room late at night.
Gloom, dread and fear possess the House of Usher and its inhabitants. But Edward sees nothing but light and love in the fair Madeline. Can he save her from the deadly illness that has plagued the Usher family for centuries—before it is too late?
Invited to the gloomy, decaying House of Usher by a boyhood chum, Edward is perplexed by his friend’s mysterious affliction. Roderick tells him that it is a curse on his family, and that all of the Ushers must eventually succumb. Upon briefly viewing Roderick’s sister—the lovely Madeline—Edward determines to save both her and Roderick from their awful fate.
But there are strange twists and turns that Edward encounters in his quest to discover the truth of the puzzling illness. Is the valet Henry up to no good? Does the house itself hold some unnatural sway over its residents? Or is there an even more sinister explanation? When Edward finally chances to meet the Lady Madeline secretly, he has no doubt that only his love and resolve can save her.
One night, it appears that he hasn’t acted soon enough. Is there still hope that he can rescue sweet Madeline from the clutches of the evil House of Usher?
Excerpt from The Fall of the House of Usher
By Edgar Allen Poe & Morticia Knight
She lowered her head and placed a hand to her cheek as if there were a blush there.
“Please forgive me for being so open in my words to you, Edward. I am just so lonely, and without any companionship anymore.”
I longed to reach out and caress her hand in reassurance, but was sure she would think me nothing but a cad, so I restrained myself.
“Dearest lady, Madeline, I swear to you that anything you say to me will be held in the strictest confidence, and that I am not at all offended by your speaking plainly. Do not take insult at what I am about to say, as I hold your brother in the highest regard, but his apparent imprisonment of you here seems rather cruel. Why do you suppose Roderick forbade you from being courted by this young man?”
I did not want to admit it to myself at that time, but I had become a little miffed at the thought of another man wooing her.
“He told me that it was for the good of everyone. That I should not get Gregory’s hopes up, as it was obvious that I suffered from the same family malady as Roderick did, and that there could never be a match. Oddly, that was right about the time I began to experience my first symptoms, but still, I believe it had to do with something else that happened. With Gregory.”
She paused, and looked away from me, towards the door. I had the feeling that she was fearful that we were being listened in on, or that she might be afraid to tell me the rest of her story.
“Please, Madeline, let me be here for you as a companion. Let me try to make up for all the loneliness you have been through these last several months.”
She turned back and gave me a feeble smile.
“I suppose if I am to meet my end soon, as Roderick says, then what’s the harm?”
My gut clenched at the thought of the exquisite creature before me being lost to the work of the gravedigger, and I shook my head vehemently.
“I will say now, Madeline, that I refuse to believe that your passing is imminent. I will do all I can to help you in that regard.”
She nodded, but looked doubtful.
“Dear, kind Edward. Now I know why my brother was so anxious to see you again. He too has been lonely. But never mind, I have accepted my fate, as he has too.”
I found myself sorry that I had broached the subject of helping her in her illness. It was obvious that she had consigned herself to hopelessness the same way her brother had. I believed my best course was to first present myself to her as a friend, then lead her into the subject of her physical welfare.
“So you said that you believed something else drove your suitor away?”
“Ah yes. I will blush as I say this, but I imagine that you will not be able to tell in the dim light. I assure you that it will be so, for I would not want to drive you from my company, lest you think I am a wanton girl.”
I shifted uncomfortably in my seat, suddenly concerned that perhaps I should not hear what she wanted to share. I was aware of my own barely controlled excitement being near her, and the thought of another man being intimate with her would surely only make me angry. Not at her—I was not holding her in judgement in any way. I knew she had to be at least five and twenty years of age, like myself, as Roderick had described his sister as being his twin when we were at school. She must have surely had some experience with a man, even if it were only gropes and kisses. A lady of her standing should have had many suitors from the first time she came out.
“Please be assured, Madeline, that I will not question anything you tell me.”
“That is very generous of you, but I still say this with some embarrassment.” She wrung her hands, clearly in a nervous state. “I was in the garden with Gregory, and we were kissing. It was the type of kissing that some of my fellow debutantes described to me when I was presented at my first season, when I was so young and full of so many dreams. He had pushed his tongue into my mouth, and I was so caught up in the new sensation I was not even aware of him sliding his hand down to cup my breast. But then he skimmed his thumb lightly over my nipple, and it hardened. I was so shocked at the thrill it gave me that I lost all sense of propriety and allowed him to continue.
“It was then that I heard Roderick yell for me from the terrace, and even though we were seated on a bench behind one of the hedges, I was terrified we had been found out. Even Gregory seemed flustered, as he let go of me so quickly I almost toppled over the seat. He stood up, straightened his jacket and breeches, and without even offering me his hand, strode hurriedly away. I regained my composure, and headed inside after him, but the look on Roderick’s face had me scared. It was immediately after that I noticed my first symptoms, and was confined to my quarters due to my illness.”
I was struck with a series of conflicting emotions. The prevalent one was jealousy. However uncalled for the feeling was, it still existed. I had no claim to this woman, and I had no knowledge of this Gregory, but it mattered not. Then there was anger at how callously her suitor had pushed her away. Did he still call for her? Did she still pine for him? Finally, as much as it embarrasses me to confess, there was excitement from her story. I had pictured every second of the embrace, only it had been my tongue exploring the inside of her sweet mouth, my hand on her breast, awakening her desire.
