The Devil Take You, #historicalromance set in 1307 during the Scottish Wars of Independence #rerelease @AuthorHKCarlton Read an excerpt

The Medieval Bad Boy is Back!

Thank you so much for having me back to your blog. I'm so excited to once again share Gard and Braelynn's story with readers. After a brief hiatus, The Devil Take You, has found a new home.

The Devil Take You, is set in 1307, during the Scottish Wars of Independence.

Here’s the blurb:

Braelynn Galbraith wants peace for her beloved Scotland, marriage to her childhood sweetheart, and a house full of children. In that order. But evil incarnate, in the form of Gard Marschand, turns her life inside out and destroys all hope of a decent marriage.

Known in the Highlands as the legendary devil, Gard Marschand raids his way across Scotland and England amassing power and property in his malevolent wake. He will stop at nothing in his pursuit to regain what is lost— even conceal his true identity and associate with his enemies. His determination is all-consuming until he and his men lay siege to Ross-shire and one feisty Scottish lass obliterates his single-minded purpose.
Can Gard abandon his deep-seated need for revenge for a love that just might save his rotten soul? Or will he succumb to the demons that hound him and surrender to the devil within?

I believe your stay in purgatory has only just begun…

I love a good historical romance, don't you?

Before I started writing; historicals were my go-to reads. I read every Julie Garwood, Judith McNaught, Kinley MacGregor, and Jude Deveraux book I could get my hands on—long before e-readers. And then I discovered the phenomenal Karen Marie Moning!

So, when I decided I was going to try my hand at writing I thought I was going write strictly historical romance. The experts say write what you know.

And well, there's also that other saying about best laid plans... LOL

It was both interesting and hard work, getting back into this story and revisiting these characters. What hadn't changed was how much I love them. And not only Gard and Braelynn, but also the secondary characters who helped bring this story to life. It also reminded me, how much I enjoyed doing the research for the historical component, and the precarious political climate of the time as well.

I wanted to create something a bit different. So I started with a villain and I made him the center of the story. He is severely flawed and cruel, driven by anger and hell bent on revenge.

Then the hard part was, how to present him in a way that would still endear him to readers.

That was the fun part of writing this book. It was challenging right from the beginning and I knew that I had to create the right woman with a combination of strength, resilience, and an overabundance of, if not understanding, at the very least acceptance, for a man who had no remorse for any of his wrongdoings and with no inclination or desire to change. Braelynn Galbraith began as the woman in the wrong place at the wrong time, and she eventually evolved into a character that could stand toe-to-toe with the devil and hold her own.

I hope readers will enjoy Gard and Braelynn's story, as much as I did writing it.

Excerpt:

Brae kept her back to him, too ashamed to face him.

He grabbed her by the arms with enough force to bruise her flesh, and he spun her around. He paused momentarily, his gaze darting about her tear-stained cheeks.

“You will not do that again!” he roared.

“I dinna e’en ken wha’ I did!” she retorted.

Gard bared his teeth and flung her away.

Losing her balance, she hit the wet pallet.

With as much dignity as she could muster, she stood, then brushed herself off.

Anger like she had never experienced burned in her belly.

Brae did not consider her actions, she ran at him with this newfound fury. She hurled herself at his chest. When he reached to steady her, she raised her hand, then struck him with all her might. The blow landed on his chin.

He reared in shock.

“I willna do it again. Because ya willna touch me again! Do ya hear me? Dinna touch me!” she screamed, standing toe-to-toe with him. She would not concede. Even if he retaliated, he would have to look her in the face to do it, and she would not cower. She slapped indiscriminately. “Dinna e’er come ta me like tha’ again! Not unless ya be man enough ta finish it!”

His black eyes gleamed with fury as she struck him again and again.

“I canna take it anamore! Ya willna treat me this way! I willna have it!” Tears fell in earnest as she continued to scream like a madwoman. “I have done nuthin’ ta ya, Gard, ta deserve your rough treatment, day after day.” She punched his shoulder. “If I dinna seem like Braelynn Galbraith anamore, ya be a’righ’. ‘Tis all your fault. Ya drag me further and further inta your murky world o’ wretchedness, evra damned nigh’ ‘tis the same.”

She slammed her palms into his abdomen so hard that he took a step backward before bracing his legs apart to accept more of her attack.

She fisted her hands and pummeled him. “Ya canna stand me durin’ the ligh’ o’ day, but ya come ta me in sleep. Your unconscious desires me.” She continued to assault his person, uncaring if he would retaliate. “Ya turn ta me. Ya put us both in a state o’ bein’ tha’ I didna e’en ken existed.” She hammered at him. “And then ya leave me! And ya seek oot someone else ta expend your want.” She clenched her teeth at the pain it caused her, then she released her pent-up angst with her fists. “How do ya think tha’ makes me feel? Oh aye! I ken! Ya dinna care. Ya do wha’ ya wish. Ya are the great and powerful Gard Marschand and ya treat people abysmally and ya beat children and ya seize things tha’ arna yours. Ya kidnap women from their homes and ya ruin their lives, but as long as ya are content bein’ miserable, all is a’righ’ wit’ the warped and twisted world ya have created, built on anger and revenge!”

Crying openly, she punched him. “Ya willna do it ta me anamore. Do ya hear me? No more will ya turn me inside oot. Ya willna touch me again, Gard, fore if ya do I will turn your own dirk on ya. See if I dinna!”

* * * *

Her fists slowed.

Gard was incensed by Brae’s audacity, but he was also oddly pleased, if not extremely stimulated by the assault. Grown men did not stand up to him like she just had.

He took a moment to harness his anger. “‘Twas always the plan,” he explained, “if you have forgotten, for you to be able to defend yourself against me. And now that you truly hate me, you may just be able to bring yourself to do it.”

“God kens ‘twould be a lot less agonizin’ for me if I did!” She stomped her foot, then planted her hands in the middle of his chest and heaved with all her might. While he recovered his balance, she made for the exit, and ran for her life.

“Now, let’s quit speculating about what could have been and get on with the good stuff. What did you bring?” Siri peeked at Iris’ luggage.

Iris handed her a nightgown. “Seriously? What are you, ninety?” Siri choked the flannel and shook it.

“Well, I thought it was gonna be cold up here. Okay! There are matching slippers.”

Siri scowled. “Jesus Christ, I thought after last year you’d come prepared, and I specifically told you in my last text to bring something naughty! Didn’t you bring anything sexy?”

“Not really. Other than matching bras and panties. I must have missed that one. You sent me like fifty! Besides, after the one where you told me to make sure my bikini area was tidy, I’d kinda had enough.”

“Oh for fuck’s sake, Iris. Don’t you do anything special for Kyle at Christmas? I’m not putting that on. In fact, I’m taking it home and ripping it up for rags! Have I neglected you so much that you don’t know how to be sexy anymore?”

“Well, what else have you got in your bag? I’m sure you must have something that is a little more me and lot less...” She waved her hands around Siri’s ample cleavage. “... you!”

Victoria’s Secret doesn’t have a granny line, Eye!”

“Why not? Grandmas are sexy, too.”

Out of patience, Siri stamped her foot.

“Okay, okay. How about this?” From her own pack, Iris held up a solid green camisole and a pair of sleep shorts with snowmen all over them.

“Oh dear Lord, I’m twelve again.” Siri rubbed her temple.

“It’s what I wear to bed. Kyle thinks they’re cute,” Iris pouted.

“Well, when I’m done with him, cute is going to be the last word he’s thinking. In fact, he’s not going to be thinking at all, because all the blood up here...” She tapped her head. “... is gonna drain down here!” She gestured down around her pelvis. “And when we swap back, before bed, and he fucks you good, you can thank me in the morning... grandma!” she added.

#MMromance 'Adrenaline Lust' from guest author @HKCarlton

An attending physician tutors his intern in more than just medicine...

Adrenaline Lust
by
H K Carlton

Blurb:
Follow intern Blaine Sproles as he navigates his fellowship in the emergency department of a busy hospital.
After a particularly gruesome trauma, Blaine and attending physician, Doctor Kin Jerome, find themselves in a post-adrenaline fueled tryst. A surprise encounter that leaves Blaine questioning not only his impetuous behavior but also his sexual orientation.
Though the more experienced Dr. Jerome sloughs it off as nothing more than adrenaline lust, a spontaneous burst of hormones after a traumatic experience, Blaine is not convinced and can’t stop thinking about it or the handsome older physician.
Working so closely, the normally heterosexual men explore an intimate relationship built on mutual respect, caring and smoldering attraction. But it’s uncharted territory for both men.
Can it truly last? Or will it fizzle out just as quickly as it began, proving, the original hypothesis, that adrenaline lust is nothing more than a flash of hormonal desire without the need of emotional attachment or longevity?
Publisher Note: gay-for-you, just-for-now, erotica

Excerpt:

Blaine sat in the quiet cafeteria, with large textbooks set out all over the long banquet style table.

Absently, he shoved a French fry dripping with gravy into his mouth as he read the same passage for the second time.

Unexpectedly, someone reached over his shoulder and snagged a limp fry from the Styrofoam container.

“What’s all this, Sproles?”

It was the first time he and Dr. Jerome had been on the same rotation since the incident in the locker room. His body reacted the moment he recognized the deep voice behind him. Snippets of their encounter in the shower flitted through his mind, as it had sporadically ever since it’d happened. Especially when he tried to sleep. Stupidly, he’d thought it would be the excessive blood he wouldn’t be able to erase, but instead he couldn’t seem to get Dr. Jerome out of his mind. And every time he relived it, he sported a massive boner and had no choice but to relieve it. If he kept it up, at this rate, he’d contract Carpal Tunnel.

But his biggest fear was that what happened would change their dynamic and the ease with which they worked together.

He looked up to find Kin standing over him chowing down on his dinner.

Blaine had to take a deep breath before he could answer. “Uhh, you know, I’m trying to decide on a topic for the dreaded culminating thesis. My proposal is due in a month.”

With easy-going confidence, the attending spun one of the chairs around backward, then straddled the seat. “So what have you narrowed it down to?”

“Stem ce...”

“Overdone,” Kin cut him off before he could finish. He even had the audacity to shut the book and push it away before peering at the next open journal. “What else ya got?”

“If you’d let me finish my thought...”

“Oh, you are gonna make a good ER doc.” Kin grinned as he pinched another chip.

“... stem cells and regenerative vascular medicine.”

“Okay.” Slowly, he nodded. “What else?” he asked sternly.

“Well, as you can see,” Blaine gestured over the pages. “The chronic complications of arteriovenous fistulas for hemodialysis.”

“I sense a theme here, Dr. Sproles.”

“Yeah, I guess.”

Kin squinted. “Are you thinking of changing your specialty?”

Noncommittally, he rolled his shoulder.

“Our recent trauma victim really got to you, huh?” The creases around Kin’s eyes deepened.

“I can’t stop thinking about it.”

The handsome physician averted his gaze and stared at the tabletop. “Yeah, me too,” he answered softly, giving Blaine the distinct impression it wasn’t only the medical aspect of the case he’d been mulling over. Something else they had in common.

It took Blaine another second to gather his thoughts. All he could think about was the ER doc’s skilled hand firmly and skillfully bringing him to climax. He placed his arm in his lap to cover yet another burgeoning erection.

“Uhh,” he started shakily. “Or ya know, I could disprove the psychology behind adrenaline lust,” he blurted what was really on his mind.

Slowly, Kin raised his slate blue gaze. For a suspended moment, they shared a pointed stare. The corner of Kin’s generous mouth curved, but only the one side. It wasn’t quite a smile, more amusement than anything.

“Good luck with that.”

“You really believe that, don’t you?” Blaine watched him carefully.

“Sure. We see it all the time. Sometimes it’s victims falling for first responders. Others it’s two victims who turn to one another for comfort after surviving some catastrophic event they’ve endured. Sometimes it’s doctors and nurses or paramedics. Cops. Fireman. It’s a trauma bond. It’s what happened to us the other night. I call it adrenaline lust.
Others call it post-traumatic sex. It happens, Sproles. It’s a stress reliever, a release. Like any other. It’s a base human response.”

He stood and turned the chair back around, sliding it in up tight to the table. “But it’s also something the administration would rather not acknowledge exists. They’d never approve the submission.”

He turned to leave, but not before Blaine noted the unmistakable bulge in his standard blue emergency room scrubs.

“Yeah, a base human response,” he repeated under his breath. And they were both still boned up over it.

Before Kin reached the exit, Blaine called, “Hey, what was your final thesis, anyway?”

The side of Kin’s mouth stretched. “Stem cells, of course.”

Blaine rolled his eyes as Kin disappeared down the corridor.

Today's guest author is David Russell

Welcome David,  Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a UK-based romance writer; all my stories have a distinctly British feel.   They have been classified as 'soft vanilla' - non-explicit, and as being nearer to literary than to genre fiction.
I also write poetry, speculative fiction, and journalism
I've been writing erotica since the mid-1980s. Published extensively in magazines and anthologies along with several books, poetry and prose. I also recorded and am the singer-songwriter of a vinyl album, Bricolage recorded by Billy Childish for Hangman Records 1992, CD albums Bacteria Shrapnel and The Burglars of Britain (1998).

David has brought along some of his books today to share,

Self's Blossom

This is about a young woman's self-discovery. Selene is a 'success story', having become a top journalist, while retaining her dazzling looks. However, in the past she has had unhappy relationships, and feels she has missed out on hedonistic fun.  This she obtains, firstly with a young stranger on a beach, and finally with enigmatic Hudson: tryst is preceded by cultural tourism, and careful sizing up of minds. Afterwards Selene returns to her 'I stand on my own' attitude. While she is on holiday, her mind is free to ramble, often into Selene's chequered past. Flashback blurs into the present, past-rooted interior monologue into direct observation. The dialogue is sparse. Selene is a cautious, premeditative type, in whom thought, reflection and analysis outweigh direct action. Selene’s subtle, monitoring mind coolly observes and controls all the events. Maybe she is super-confident, or perhaps has a deep, underlying insecurity. She is many things to many readers.

Read an excerpt from Self's Blossom

Here, she was on a beach, pure and simple. Now the sea breathed heavily, whispering and murmuring to her. It was returning her stare, speaking to her. It was the spirit of love, beckoning her with a pulsing, sinewy body. In all its lines, shades, and fleeting forms, Selene saw the essence of pure beauty, all grace of form, flesh, limb and feature. It was in one, all the lovers of whom she could possibly dream, conflated into one elemental ideal. He, pure love in soul, bade her to enter his domain and make it hers. His arms moved her hands to unclasp, unbutton, and unzip . . . the blossom emerged. The sun became the eye of all that was not earth, and Selene loved fully, though the pallor of her skin left her momentarily abashed.

At first she lay in the tide's path, the top of her head at its most extreme mark. The sand bank made a soft bed. The sea lover smoothly caressed her calves, thighs, hips, breasts, shoulders, and cheeks before retreating to pause in his mossy pinnacles. Three times this action was repeated, and then Selene stood up, wading in with arms outstretched. Her arms were linked, as she stood up to her neck in the saline flow. The balls and heels of her feet wobbled, slithering on the moss. With the next wave, she lost her balance – her breath prepared in unison with the hissing around her. She threw her head back, once again horizontal, and launched into a backstroke, sweeping and circling. She parted her legs wide with each thrust of motion, each sweep of self-propulsion pushing out to answer the cavernous currents of his passion. Seven circles gave her a delicious, warm bliss –then the sea lover, well pleased, carried her back to a near-dry bed. Aching and contented, Selene dozed a while.
They were in dream concert, synchronized and occasionally syncopated, strutting the world’s catwalks—starting horizontal, then ascending, oblique, to culminate in the spirit-bedroom, their path to ecstasy strewn with flowers of discarded velvet and shot silk. Their overwhelming electricity constantly recharged all the camera flashlights’ batteries. Their essence was diffused into the flashes. “Iconic perfection, darling!”

Explorations

Newly divorced and looking for interesting new experiences, Janice takes an art class with live models and the star makes her want more than a coincidental meeting. Art model, Cedric, thinks he knows the lady from somewhere when he sees her again at the pool. Body language says a lot and chance meetings lead to a desire for more. Will Janice ask Cedric over for a private modeling job and will he accept?

Excerpt from Explorations

Sure enough, it was Cedric! Quite impressively dressed in the black of his hair colour—cords, suede shoes, velvet jacket and fine polo. In spite of blushes on both sides, recognition did not falter.
"Well, well. Worlds are ridiculously small. How come you're here?"
Cedric fumbled a few moments for words . . . at length to come out with the routine truth… "I left a book here a few days ago. I just came to collect it. But fancy us both knowing Marcus!"
"We follow life's currents, its winds and waves…come on, sit down."
* * * *
How ideal! Everything laid on! It would have really spoiled things if either of them had overstepped their customary manners and tried to arrange a meeting, as the telephone advisers always said, in a neutral public place.
Janice put on an album of Beethoven String Quartets and kept the volume low, but with quite a lot of bass. The music blended, unobtrusively, with their sensations. Its sombre explorations penetrated their minds, their hearts, their groins, punctured their inhibitions, free their breath. Ripples registered on both sides. Their dark outfits made a spectral blend, poised to melt into each other. The non-verbal was sustained, as they mentally undressed—first each other, then themselves, down to their bathing suits, at the water's edge, ready for the plunge.
* * * *
"Well," she giggled, "first leading question, what do you do? You give the impression of having quite an exciting occupation."
"I'm a journalist, articles about fashion and health products. And how about you?"
"The dreaded legal profession, highly stimulating at times, but it does stress me."
"You're not alone; one does need things to counteract the stresses."
She gave him a sustained gaze. "Hmm, hope I'm not being intrusive. I've been keeping an eye on you in the swimming pool for some time. You're looking really good now—got into swimming well…must admit I was a bit worried about you before. You seemed a bit head-heavy, imbalanced. But now you've accepted your body, toned it up and relaxed the tensions. It's the best exercise, you know involving all of you."
"I guess I've conquered some fears. I'm so glad to do it properly…" he grew a bit shy and hesitant. "It started… when you bumped into me and gave me those tips on how to improve that really clinched things for me, and…"
"Don't be shy," Janice patted his knee to assuage his hesitation.
"I had seen you before! At that party here . . . you did that beautiful dance; your skirt billowed."
"And?"
"Then to see you in your bathing costume."
"And when you did, you took the plunge, bless you."
"I just had to come in the water with you. And then, when I saw you at the art class, I was just dying to pose for you. I was secretly longing for the model not to turn up so that I would have my chance."
Janice unbuttoned Cedric's jacket, felt his shoulders and his chest. "You've got your body in trim and you can really carry yourself in trunks. Clothes look good on you, but your height of fashion is around your loins."
* * * *
The jacket dropped to the floor. Elation welled up in them both. Chemistry and magnetism made their chain-reaction. Slowly edging their heads towards one another, lips meeting eyebrows, eyelids, cheeks, chins, each other. Two deep drawn breaths were held for an ecstatic clinch with tongues. Her hand rose to his crown, massaged him through that full, drawn-out embrace.
His left hand unbuttoned her jacket, feeling her shoulder pressing from waist to hip. Breeze-like, his right raised her skirt, to rest on her thigh as high as was aesthetic at that moment. Her centre took the signal, hips pressing forward. The two of them had dived and surfaced in love's stream. What a catch for her—this controllable gentleness combined with fathoms of passion—and for him, this beauty of experience that he could now match. Aquiver, they drew back.
"You're so lovely," he panted, "I want to see you undressed."

Further Explorations , by David Russell, takes up where the first book, Explorations , left off. Janice and Cedric, who are recently divorced, have enjoyed their passionate interlude. They have experienced a rejuvenation of spirit but both are still striving for that transformation of self; to shed the constraints of their old lives and become the person each secretly desires to be. Their interlude was just the beginning of that transformation and although there are some misgivings and reluctance they agree to go their separate ways to experience all that life has to offer.  During their time apart they keep in contact via email. They each encounter financial and career success which allows them to seek out the pleasures they had missed out on while in their respective marriages. Each shares a passionate encounter with another and learns more about what they like in the opposite sex. As well they learn much about what the other seeks.  As the story approaches the end Janice and Cedric meet again.

Excerpt from further explorations

At last to be over there, down to earth, facing a new glitter, an array of visual and tactile delights… At last some real ice-breaking eye-contact in an all-American bar, and this time, massive breakthrough—no jitters! Zarinda’s iridescent, predatory eyes pierced through Adrian’s nerves and brain cells to his marrow. That perfect foil, seemingly non-existent in his past. With her swarthy skin and her obvious impulsiveness, she felt like the diametric opposite of Janice, therefore essential for him to complete his equation. On the first registering, Janice’s initial tentative quivering was erased by Zarinda’s radiant, undeflectable gaze. There was an ageless quality in her bearing, luscious blend of supple youth and maturity. These days there are those who can manage all that into their fifties and sixties.

Cedric blushed. “My impulses have recently been liberated. I have broken a blockage.”
She sized him up, down to the depths, with one penetrating glance. “You recently discovered the
right combination for your lock and now you can go ahead with me. Our vista is ever expanding.”
He had to go through the modulations of hair and skin colour, the gamut of cover, different sizes, too, but go easy on the cellulite, which was no great difficulty for him. To get the full relish and savour of all of this, he had to go through the wardrobe gamut that covered and garnished those bodies, lotions, fake tans and all, the flesh matching the photographs.

Meanwhile, Janice was sensually pulling on, zipping, buttoning those outfits whispering, “Have I perfected my magnetic allure?” He was going past the outfitters seeing his fantasy partners in and out of that array of garments through every shade of light and darkness…deliciously massed sensation of flesh, muscle and bone…the hardness of the latter sublimated as a foundation for suppleness, the crucial phrase, suspended on breath and tongue. “Undress me.”
