Alpha Male Blog Hop: What is an Alpha Male any way?

When it comes to romance novels the general assumption is that the alpha male is generally confident, sexy, challenging, a great lover, fascinating, and physically they are usually gorgeous, muscled, and tall. They can be powerful and exude auras of suppressed violence, which they use to intimidate lesser men.

They often simply 'take' their women, who 'melt' at this paragon's advances.

BUT

Is it always true?

The word alpha means according to various online sources,

• The first letter of the Greek alphabet.
• The first one; the beginning.
• In  Astronomy The brightest or main star in a constellation.
•  The leader of the pack, the dominant male and Alpha male is sometimes used as a term of abuse when describing loud, attention seeking and trouble making young men.

As an author I write my lead males to be gorgeous, intelligent, caring, creative, thoughtful and above all sexy. They have to love, give it, crave it and show it ALL the time. Sex for them is a way of life. They want their women to moan with pleasure, want to be with them, see the real them, love them.  My male lead characters like to have strong women who like sex, talk dirty sometimes, take the initiative, are intelligent and naturally melt at their feet.



At the same time my male leads all have a little something extra that endears them to us.

Excerpt,

August was running late for once. He had not slept and was just not himself. He couldn’t think straight and looked along the hanging rail at the five business suits he owned. He could make them look different with various shirts and yet today he couldn’t do his usual thing of just dressing well. He wished it was Friday and he could just wear jeans, but it was Monday and he had some important clients visiting.

He threw on a navy blue T-shirt and his gray suit. He ran his hands through this hair. He was in advertising wasn’t he? They could put up with a T-shirt from a member of the creative team. August still looked gorgeous, and the two women on duty at the reception desk at work still watched him go up to his department, looked at each other, and smiled.

Excerpt,

“Perhaps you are creative too and just don’t get to show it”. She tried to comfort him because Emma felt that was it. He was trapped in a job where he couldn’t be creative.

Jet sighed and shrugged. He felt that he didn’t have a creative bone in his body. He knew math and statistics, he knew business, and it was not supposed to be uplifting. It was just business and sometimes it was cutthroat. He made a very good salary and had little expenditure. He was grateful not to be struggling as some of his university friends were.

Emma watched him and knew that he was out of touch with himself in some way. She leaned onto his arm at shoulder level and put her hand alongside his jaw to bring his face around to hers.

Jet felt her touch like a firebrand and looked into her eyes with hope in his own. Emma moved close to him and brushed his mouth with hers as Jet closed his eyes. There was only a second or two to the whole gesture but Jet felt as if he was moving in a dream. He put his own hand alongside Emma’s face, brought her mouth back to his, and kissed her.

“Tell me about yourself Dominic. Tell me about your writing. I confess I looked you up on the internet and saw you write three columns for various magazines”.

He shrugged. “That’s about right Cassie. It’s sometimes a little more. It’s not what you would call highbrow, but it pays the bills”. Dominic didn’t tell her about all his writing because none of it seemed okay to him. He didn’t feel like a real writer and sometimes in his darker moments, he saw it as a joke that he would call himself a writer at all. There was another reason he didn’t tell her about all his work, but Dominic preferred not to think about that.

Cassie saw how he dismissed his work and looked at him kindly.

AND yet all my male leads are simply erotic.

Millie describes August

August was a whirlwind of sensation. It swirled around her and made her pulse with need.

August put his hands into her hair and his lips to hers.

He whispered. “Millie I think of nothing else but you. I dream about you”.

Millie took his words into her mouth as she kissed him softly and then replied.

“August you will drive me nuts with these kisses”.

He unbuttoned her jacket and then her shirt. He kissed her mouth softly and then bit her lips tenderly. She opened her mouth to his tongue.

He opened her bra and pushed it away to hold her breasts, gently kneading them with both hands. He had to taste them. His mouth left her lips and traveled down to her breasts. His tongue found her nipples where he lingered for a moment or two, and then he kissed up to her throat where he sucked lightly. Millie had opened his shirt and was sliding her hands around on his chest muscles. She started on his trouser zip, opening it as he kissed her mouth again, and she curled her fingers around him. He was hard, thick, and so sexy.

They stopped for a few seconds breathing against each other’s lips.

 

Jet makes love to Emma, 

Jet moved over her and lifted her hips to his. As he entered her Emma gasped, and arched towards him, helping him with little thrusting movements. They moved against each other with need until Jet slowed his hard thrusts, and leaned to kiss her, as he made sure she was feeling the hard length of him in just the right place to drive her crazy.

Jet cupped a breast in his hand and groaned just a little at the feel of her skin against his hand, her lips on his, and the thrust of her hips left him weak with longing to move faster. 

And the lovely Dominic smolders,

Cassie knew she was staring at the man who had noisily appeared in the office, but she couldn’t help it. He was startlingly good-looking, tall, dark hair, cornflower blue eyes, which seemed to Cassie to be almost too sexy.

Dominic’s gaze softened as he looked at her. He wanted to trace his finger down her cheek and over her bottom lip. He wanted to hold her face in his hands and lick her lips until she opened them to his tongue. His eyes darkened at Cassie and she could feel the air of desire that Dominic exuded.
