He stopped the kiss and although he still held her, he loosened his hold moving a fraction away.

“I wanted to kiss you as soon as I saw you. Let’s find a table.” He moved easily and confidently through the array of small, square, tables that were dotted around the paved area at the side of the main restaurant building. Next to a big tree, he stopped to pull out a chair for her at the table there. Jeanie sat down. Nathan brought the chair from the opposite side of the table and sat down close to her. There was a lit candle in a green, glass container in the middle of the table. He moved it away to the far end, and then smiled at her.

“Do you want to eat they do great fish dishes here?”

Jeanie shook her head, suddenly shy under his blue gaze. He was so attractive. “No just coffee will be great.”

A staff member had arrived at their table and Nathan gave him a cheery look. He took the menu from the young man and handed it to Jeanie. Leaning close to her ear he said, “Ice cream cake then, it’s very yummy with coffee.” Jeanie couldn’t help smiling as she looked at the menu and saw that a range of dessert cakes was available with coffee.

She glanced at the waiter, “Black coffee, and a piece of chocolate ice-cream cake, please.” She handed Nathan the menu and he closed it giving it to the young man waiting for his order.

“I’ll have the same, thank you.”

They were alone at the table and Nathan leaned on one elbow to gaze at Jeanie.

“Tell me what brought you to Owlswick its not somewhere people stop anymore.”

She gazed back at him and thought about the kiss. She touched her lips with her fingertips and Nathan ran his tongue over his top lip. He took her hand and held it on the table gently. It seemed completely right that they were together like this, strangers to each other, but wrapped in a curious spell of longing.
