Claudie was easing off his knee and he felt bereft as she stood.

He wanted her back on his lap, her warm bottom against his thighs and her head on his shoulder. He stood too and they both found their clothes to dress.

“I could drop you somewhere, Jasper,” she offered, as she pulled on her jeans.

A spear of worry made him rush his words. “No, no that’s okay.” He slowed down. “I don’t want to bother you. It’s late.” He saw the disappointment in her expression. It put a frown between his eyes. He rubbed at it. “I’d love to see you again.”

She smiled. “I’d love to see you.” She took a cell phone from the back pocket of her jeans. “I’ll text you my number.” She looked at him expectantly.

Jasper stood in his jeans and boots before her. He ran a hand through his hair and with huge trepidation took out his cell phone. He told her his number knowing the cell phone in his hand was dead and nothing would happen. When she finished texting, he pretended it arrived, and shoved the cell back in his pocket. 

Claudie smiled again trusting him, and it nearly broke his heart.
