Her head ached. Her stomach churned and hot tears stung behind her eyes. She swallowed them down.

Johnson was back. He took the handcuff from the steering wheel and replaced it on her wrists, but then he put an orange Popsicle into her hand.

“It’ll help the lip.”

Stunned by this, Michelle muttered. “Thanks.”

She held the Popsicle against her cheekbone, and its white paper wrapper crackled. She tried to pull it off.

Before he started the car, Johnson, reached over and slid the wrapping off the fruit ice. He stuffed it in the door compartment and drove off.
