Driving down the coast to the
cabin, Michelle’s thoughts tumbled around. I
couldn’t let him come. What if the place is trashed? How would I explain that?
How would I get the diamonds? No, I had to do that. Dominic, darling sweet
Dominic, I’m sorry …
She entered the track to the
cabin and pulled up alongside it as usual. Driven by the need to get back to
Dominic and make things right, Michelle grabbed the cabin key, and left her
purse on the floor. She left the car keys in the dash and ran around to the door
of the cabin. This will only take a
couple of minutes.
Michelle unlocked the door and
dashed into the cabin. She came to a stop as she registered the disarray, then
walked rapidly into the kitchen. Things were moved around, but it didn’t look
as if the intruder had opened the freezer. A chair was tipped over, saucepans
and crockery were out of the cupboards, but not broken. They’d been placed on
the work surfaces. Michelle was about to check the freezer when she was grabbed
from behind.
Strong arms gripped her, keeping
her arms clamped to her sides. She bucked backwards trying to break the hold.
Her attacker left one arm around her, and grabbed her around the throat with
the other hand. He jerked her head back and talked in her ear.
“Stop struggling. I don’t want to
hurt you. Where’s the guy who lives here?”
Michelle winced as he grabbed her
hair and pulled hard. “That hurts. I don’t know... I-I was just renting the
place for a vacation.”
The man bundled her against the
wall and thrust his knee between her legs. He pushed her head against the wall.
Her face was squashed against the cool white plaster. His forearm trapped her
as he pressed it onto the middle of her back.
He doesn’t want me to see him.
“I’m serious. It will get nasty
if you keep lying. I saw you together. It was obvious you knew each other well.
Where are the diamonds and the painting?” He knocked her head against the wall
with considerable force.
Pain shot across her forehead.
She muttered. “I have no idea what he did with the stuff.”
She heard a gruff sound close by
her ear. The man’s aftershave was potent and she felt nauseated.
“We’ll see what you mean to him,
shall we?”
He turned her in one violent
move, grabbed her hands, slapped on handcuffs, and pulled her by the hair to
sit on the nearest upright chair. He wound her hair around one hand and with
the other he brought a cell phone out of his jacket pocket and used his thumb
to call someone.
Michelle waited, her gaze fixed
on his face. It’s the assistant,
Probert’s assistant, the other client … Johnson. If he’s trying to call Connor,
the burner’s destroyed … hell. She squirmed under the punishing sting as
the man yanked at her hair.
